When the US withdrew from Afghanistan, areas throughout the country saw an influx of Afghan refugees. Wanting to support these new Americans, Title I and Title II staff in LWIA 17 decided to partner with a local employer and nonprofit organization to figure out how to collaboratively serve this population. The outcome? Over 20 refugees successfully transitioned into the community with support from the workforce system. Title I and Title II staff will discuss what they learned from this initiative and how they are now better positioned to help various refugee communities. The presentation will also include a spokesperson from Champaign’s The Refugee Center, who will provide an overview of ways to support refugees.
