Carl Perkins Textbook Lending Program at Sowela Technical Community College

The Carl Perkins Textbook Lending Program at Sowela Technical Community College in Lake Charles, Louisiana, was established through the Office of Student Support Services to assist students who are unable to purchase textbooks to begin their courses. With the assistance of Carl Perkins funds and a private grant, students can request assistance with borrowing at least one textbook from SOWELA’s Library Services. The deadline for applying for the program is always a week and a half prior to the start of the semester. Students are notified within that time period of their eligibility to participate in the program. Textbooks are loaned on a first-come first-serve basis. Students may be assisted after the deadline if the textbook(s) they require are still available. Students that apply are not guaranteed textbook assistance through the program but are encouraged to apply. The Carl Perkins Textbook Lending Program assists students classified as a one of the following special populations: students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students,

students in nontraditional programs of study that are nontraditional for their gender (e.g. Nursing for men, Automotive for women, Aviation for women, etc.), single parents (including single pregnant women), displaced homemakers, and students with limited English proficiency.
