FY13 SVCC Women in Criminal Public Safety New Look Project

On March 22, 2013, Sauk Valley Community College hosted an event titled “Becoming a Community Leader” in which female area high school and college students were invited to participate. These students (preferably PELL eligible or economically disadvantaged) were either undecided in their major or were currently enrolled in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Service, or Criminal Justice courses. At this event, participants learned about each CTE program from instructors and professionals in the field, participated in hands-on activities, were educated on goal setting in terms of creating career plans, and learned the importance of being financially prepared for college and beyond. Based on individual participant event evaluations, the students enjoyed meeting with the public safety professionals as well as participating in hands-on activities similar to what professionals in the field would experience.
